Where plasterboard waste comes from
Plasterboard appears in almost every renovation and demolition job. It's used for walls, ceilings, cornices, bulkheads, and partition frames. A single-storey home renovation can generate hundreds of kilograms of plasterboard waste - sometimes more if you're stripping plasterboard lining or full ceiling systems.

Can plasterboard go in a hooklift bin?
Yes. Plasterboard (plaster) is an accepted waste type and can be mixed with other renovation waste in a hooklift bin. Whole sheets, broken pieces, and offcuts are all fine.
Weight and volume: why size matters more than weight
Standard 13mm plasterboard weighs around 10kg per square metre. A full room renovation generates hundreds of kilograms of plasterboard, not tonnes. The catch: plasterboard is bulky. A few rooms of renovation waste can fill a large volume quickly.
Wet plasterboard is much heavier and harder to handle, so keep it dry before loading. Your weight limits won't constrain you on plasterboard; volume will.
Which bin size for plasterboard disposal
Plasterboard usually comes with other renovation waste - timber, nails, dust, fittings. Size your bin around the total renovation waste, not plasterboard alone.
- 9m³ Standard ($850): one small room renovation, or isolated ceiling/wall removal
- 12m³ Medium ($1,150): 1–2 room renovation with other mixed waste
- 15m³ Large ($1,450 - most popular): whole-house renovation, or 3+ room project
- 20m³ XL ($1,750): major renovation, full demolition, or mixed with landscaping waste
Plasterboard usually isn't your limiting factor. If you're sizing a bin for a renovation, think about all the waste combined - timber, plaster, fittings, and general rubble.
How to load plasterboard safely
- Break large sheets into manageable pieces - roughly 1–2 metre sections - before loading
- Stack flat pieces against the walls of the bin to maximise space
- Load plasterboard first, then pile heavier waste (timber, bricks) on top
- Keep plasterboard dry - water adds weight and makes it fragile and harder to handle
- Fill gaps with smaller offcuts and dust
